Commercial Cost/Project Accountant

Our long standing senior cost engineer has decided to wind down towards retirement from January 2022, he is likely to be working mostly from home on a reducing working week. So, we are looking to recruit a new resource to gradually take over these duties whilst also taking the opportunity to change the way this function operates within the business and adapt our working methods to new structures and systems as the business grows.

The business has 4 distinctly different business streams (Package systems (Project manufacturing), service & small works, Hire & finally, Dosing Products (parts)), each requiring a different approach to project accounting. The business currently uses a “Redsky” integrated accounting system but will shortly be moving over to a more bespoke system developed alongside our parent company. The new system provides an opportunity to develop new streamlined processes and methodologies for project & job accounting.

We envisage a role for a cost/project accountant to work alongside the finance team adopting responsibility for cost/project accounting element of our commercial activities across the 4 business steams. Reporting to the Managing Director and working/engaging closely with the 4 business stream leads and project managers to accurately manage the financial accounting of jobs and projects and feeding data to the finance manager for the overall accounting function. The duties would likely include:

  • Regular meetings with business stream leads and Project Managers to:
    • Develop cash forecasting for projects.
    • Assist with payment applications and/or invoices.
    • Create WIP analysis and reports.
    • Develop variation costing analysis.
    • Develop WIP & job cost accounting journals for month end accounts.
    • Assist project managers with margin analysis and forecasting to completion, etc.
    • Compilation of Sales and Cost of Sales reports, identification of Gross Margin and indirect cost of sale analysis by business stream.
    • Analyse & identify cross business stream work valuations and journal adjustments.
    • Analysing individual business stream P&Ls with business stream leads and investigating variances, etc.
  • Order bank remaining work analysis and forward forecasting by business stream.
  • Logging order receipts.
  • Setting up new projects on the accounting & SharePoint systems. Checking customer purchase orders & contract values against estimates & order acceptance. Developing budget allocations to cost codes from estimating sheets.
  • Project/Job closures and final accounts.
  • Work closely with Finance manager to co-ordinate job & project accounting to feed into  accounting system accurately and timely to meet accounting deadlines.
  • Develop job costing code structure to improve job cost reporting & analysis.
  • Develop & manage estimating templates to ensure default charge rates and estimating sheet formulas are reviewed and managed.
  • Raising purchase orders & logging committed costs into system.
  • Stock takes.
  • BOM analysis & setup for standard products.

Ian Price is WES Dosing Products Business Manager, leading the business stream responsible for delivering a wide range of standardised chemical dosing packages, ad-hoc dosing needs and ‘off the shelf’ dosing products & solutions. A mechanical engineer with over 20 years’ experience in fluid handling solutions into the water, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food & beverage markets.

As a qualified marine engineer, Graham has established his career in Sales and Business Development and is responsible for the business development, marketing and sales of systems, products and services across WES.

Carl joined WES as Non-Exec chairman following an appointment via the Business Growth Service to assist the business with growth strategy. A highly experienced Business Mentor, Coach, Managing Director & Non-Exec Chairman, having led product, manufacturing, contracting and service provider businesses for nearly 30 years. A strong track record of market, sales and profit growth within a diverse range of sectors.

Core competencies include business growth strategies, board & business leadership, strategic planning, sales & marketing management, P&L & balance sheet management, acquisitions, divestments, outsourcing, TUPE transfer, mentoring & coaching.

Kevin Wheeler is Managing Director. Kevin trained as an Engineer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment and joined the business in 1989. Kevin now leads the Board of Directors setting strategy and defining priorities to meet the business objectives & growth aspirations whilst adding experience to technical issues where required.
