The new Mayflower Water Treatment Works, currently under construction, is the flagship project in South West Water’s 2015-2020 business plan. The new works will replace the outdated treatment works at Crownhill in Plymouth and provide a secure, high-quality drinking water supply to more than ¼ million customers across the wider Plymouth area for generations to come.

The project incorporates cutting-edge water treatment processes, developed in the Netherlands and used for the first time in the UK.

WES has been working with South West Water’s delivery alliance, H5O, throughout the detailed design phase. We have now been awarded the contract to design, manufacture, install and commission twelve separate chemical dosing systems during 2017.

About the Mayflower project:

Located on the edge of the Dartmoor national park and scheduled for operation in September 2018, the Mayflower project has some impressive statistics:

  • 80,000 tonnes of earthworks required
  • 20000 tonnes of aggregate will be utilised
  • 4,500m3 of concrete will be poured
  • a 7km pipeline to be tunnelled/laid
  • 3km of cable ducts to be laid

The innovative treatment processes were developed by Dutch company PWNT and tested at a prototype facility at the Crownhill site between 2013 and 2015.

Global design and consultancy firm Arcadis is the main design contractor, in partnership with consulting engineers Pell Frischmann. Together they will be responsible for all the design work outside of the key treatment process.

Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty is the main construction contractor, in partnership with Interserve, responsible for the construction of all infrastructure, buildings and pipelines for the new water treatment works.

Arcadis, Pell Frischmann, Balfour Beatty and Interserve have been working with South West Water as part of the company’s H5O engineering delivery alliance since 2009.
